I launched Beyond The Big 5 to promote small to mid-sized publishers; mostly those which aren’t part of a national or international corporation. I love books from all manners of publishers. However, on this site, I’ve chosen to focus on those who may not get as much publicity. That means I won’t be covering books from the big 5 (Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster), but I’ll be posting about great reads from a wide variety of smaller publishers.
It can be hard to pin down the definitions of ‘independent publisher’, and ‘smaller publisher’. I’m not setting a hard and fast rule here. However, usually, when I talk about one book, it will be from a small or mid-sized publisher, not one of the biggest indies like Bloomsbury and Scholastic. When I post lists, I’ll include some from the bigger independent presses, though – especially books by marginalised authors. Of course, I’ll also include a lot of books from smaller publishers in these lists.
